Indian Wedding Gifting Timeline: Roka to Reception
There are up to six events and you are not expected to give at all of them. Here is which ones matter.
An Indian wedding in the US can run to six separate events across two weekends. Guests reasonably want to know whether they are expected to hand over an envelope at every one of them. They are not.
The events, and whether you give
Roka or engagement
Give if you are invited, and keep it modest. $51 to $101 for most guests. This is a family and close friends event, so if you are there at all, you are close enough to give something.
Mehndi and sangeet
Generally no envelope. These are celebration events rather than gifting events. If you did not attend the roka and this is your first, a small envelope is a graceful way to catch up.
The wedding ceremony
Yes. This is the main one, and if you give at only one event, this is it.
The reception
If the reception is a separate event on a different day, one envelope across both is normal. There is an envelope table at whichever you attend.
The simple rule
One envelope per household, at the main event you attend. Anything beyond that is generosity rather than obligation.

How much at each
Amounts always end in a one. For the main wedding, $101 for a friend or coworker, $151 to $251 if you are close, $251 to $501 for extended family, more for immediate family. Roka and engagement sit roughly half of whatever you would give at the wedding.
Envelopes for each occasion
Roka and engagement envelopes tend to be simpler. The wedding is where the foil and the traditional motifs belong. Browse luxury shagun envelopes for the main event and premium envelopes for the smaller ones.
Buy them together
If you are attending several events for the same family, order all your envelopes in one run. It costs less and the set matches.

If you are the family hosting
You are giving as well as receiving: return gifts at the sangeet, favors at the reception, and envelopes to visiting children. Foil tags with your names on the favors are what guests actually notice. See best wishes tags.
If you cannot attend
Send the envelope with someone who is going, or post it before the wedding rather than after. A gift arriving three weeks late reads as an afterthought even when it is not.

FAQ
1. Do I give an envelope at every wedding event?
No. One envelope per household at the main event you attend is standard. Roka and engagement warrant a smaller separate gift if you are invited.
2. How much do I give at a roka or engagement?
Roughly half what you would give at the wedding. For most guests that is $51 to $101.
3. Do I need to give at the mehndi or sangeet?
Generally not. These are celebration events rather than gifting events.
4. If the reception is a separate day, do I give twice?
No. One envelope covers both the ceremony and the reception.
5. What if I cannot attend the wedding?
Send the envelope with a guest who is going, or post it before the date. Arriving after the wedding reads poorly.
6. Should the envelopes match across events?
If you are attending several events for one family, ordering them in a single run keeps the paper and foil consistent and costs less.
