2 x 1 inch tags. Anything larger overwhelms the favor.
Jars and candles
2.5 x 1.5 inch, tied around the neck rather than hanging from a corner.
Larger boxes and hampers
3 inch and up, where there is room for names and a date.
How many to order
Guest count plus fifteen percent. People take spares, tags get damaged in setup, and a second order at short notice costs more than the extra tags ever would.

Thread through, not around
A tag threaded through its punched hole and knotted sits flat. One wrapped around the whole box twists.
Match the twine to the metal
