Cake Topper Ideas for Birthdays and Weddings
The topper is what makes a cake read as deliberate rather than bought. Most of getting it right is sizing.
The cake is the thing everyone photographs, and the topper is the part of it that carries the words. Get it right and the cake looks intentional. Get it wrong, usually by sizing it badly, and it looks like something was added at the last minute, because it was.
Sizing, which is where most people go wrong
The two thirds rule
Measure the diameter of the top of your cake and choose a topper about two thirds that width. A topper that spans the full width looks cramped and leaves the lettering running off the edge in photographs. Much under half and it reads as an afterthought.
Tiered cakes
Size to the top tier, not to the base. This is the single most common mistake with wedding cakes, and it is an expensive one to discover on the day.
Stem length
A short stem is fine on a shallow buttercream cake and useless on a tall sponge, where it will tip forward as soon as it is inserted. Ours are cut with a stem long enough to seat properly in a real cake.
Choosing a finish
Mirror gold
The safest choice for weddings and milestone birthdays. It picks up warm venue lighting and reads clearly against both white icing and dark chocolate.
Mirror silver
Cooler, more modern, and better against pastels and cool toned decoration where gold can look yellow.
Rose gold
Works particularly well on blush, cream and floral cakes. Less versatile than gold but excellent when it fits.
Black or clear acrylic
Clear reads as minimal and almost disappears on a white cake, which is either the point or a problem depending on your intent. Black is the highest contrast option and photographs sharply on pale icing.

What to actually put on it
Birthdays
A name alone outlasts an age. If you want to reuse the topper year after year, order the name and skip the number. If the birthday is a milestone, the number is the point, so lead with it.
Weddings
Two first names, or a shared surname, or a short phrase. Long phrases lose legibility at cake scale because the letters get thin. If it does not fit on one line comfortably, it is too long.
Children's parties
Themed shapes and a name together. Butterfly topper sets work well because the smaller pieces spread across the cake rather than crowding the center.
Ordering a personalized one
Send the exact spelling with your order. Acrylic is laser cut, not printed, so once it is cut it cannot be edited. We email a proof for anything personalized and cut only once you approve it, which is the moment to check the spelling properly rather than skim it.
Production is 3 to 7 business days for a personalized topper, then shipping across the US. Allow a fortnight for a party and rather more for a wedding.
Practical things nobody mentions
Wrap the stem
The acrylic itself does not react with icing, but a small piece of parchment around the part that goes into the cake keeps things tidy and makes removal cleaner.
Insert it late
Put the topper in at the venue rather than before transport. Toppers and car journeys do not go together.
Keep it
Wipe it, dry it, and it will last years. A name topper reused across five birthdays costs almost nothing per use, which is a better argument for acrylic than any amount of description.
Pairing it with the rest of the table
If the cake carries a name in gold, matching gold foil on the favors ties the table together without effort. Foil gift tags on return gifts and thank you tags on favor boxes are the usual pairing, and ordering them in the same run keeps the metal consistent.
